Announcements:

  • Sarah announced that we will have our monthly board meeting at Ascension Episcopal School next Monday, July 7, 2008 at 5:30 pm.  All board members should attend, all members are invited to attend.

  • Sarah thanks Craig for his excellent and selfless leadership as president of the Houston Westchase Rotary Club for Rotary year 2007-2008.  As do we all.  Thanks, Craig.

  • We need volunteers from 0700 to 1300 on Saturday, July 26 to assist with parking for the SAVE ALIEF PROJECT.

  • We will need 35 volunteers each day on October 25 and 26 to man our commitment to manage parking for the Wings Over Houston event at Ellington Air Field.

Rotary Moment:

George talked about the Rotary Community Corps, a grass roots, community self help organization founded in 1986 where non-Rotarians who decide to start community projects are assisted by Rotarians with their expertise, and or management skills.  Thanks, George.

Program:

Sarah introduced our speaker, Marcos Flores.

Marcos Flores

Marcos gave us an in depth presentation about Engineers Without Borders.  EWB is only 3 years old, but presently has 8000 members working on 230 projects in 43 different countries, including the USA. 70% of these projects involve potable water and sanitation.  Marcos’s present project is near his hometown of Cochamaba, Bolivia. It is a water project for people without fresh, potable water.  He is looking for funding for this project and matching funds from the Rotary Foundation.  Thanks Marcos.

Members Absent:

Irma, Dee and Lee.  We missed you.

Wisdom:

  • Everybody gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense.  Gertrude Stein, author.

  • Be as a tower firmly set, shakes not its top for any blast that blows.  Dante Alighieri, poet
